Few things are as glamorous as soft and silky hair. You know, the type of hair that you can’t wait to glide your fingers through because it feels like running water to the touch, and falls smoother than a bride’s veil. The look is easier than you think, and only needs a few tweaks of your haircare routine. Here are the most essential tips to get that princess-perfect hair:

Rinse with cold water

Washing your hair with warm water opens the cuticles and allows shampoo to deep cleanse, but try rinsing with cold water to reseal the cuticles and lock the moisture into your locks to keep them perfectly hydrated. This warm-then-cold method is great for coloured hair, as colour sits in the cuticle. Cold water prevents it from being washed out or fading.

Oil treatments

Humans have used oils in their hair for centuries because of their softening properties. When choosing oil treatments for your hair, aim for the winning trifecta – olive, argan and coconut oil – but don’t limit yourself as there are plenty to choose from. Head to your nearest salon, where they’ll use non-greasy, oil-rich products like the Mizani Supreme Oil range, which all contain the likes of sesame, jojoba, almond, avocado, apricot, olive fruit, sunflower and argan oils. The Supreme Oil range is designed for any hair type, and the ultra-light treatments hydrate and smooth. These products are especially effective at reviving dry and dehydrated hair, leaving it brilliantly shiny and full of life.

Use the right brush

Use a wide-toothed comb when your hair is wet, and a bristle brush when it’s dry. The wide-tooth comb has less grip, which is important as wet hair is vulnerable to breakage, so it will allow for gentle combing. The secret is in the ‘backwards’ technique – starting at the ends and working your way upwards to the midshaft. If you have naturally curly hair, it’s important that you wait for your hair to dry before using a detangling comb to prevent breakage.

Deep conditioning

If washing is to remove excess dirt and oils from your hair, a deep condition is necessary to replenish your hair with moisture and nutrients to keep it soft and strong. Use a deep conditioning mask like Redken All Soft Heavy Cream Super Treatment Mask. It’s infused with argan oil, which locks in moisture and builds strength. For colour-treated hair, use a mask like Kérastase Masque Chromatique to give your hair the same deep conditioning with ingredients like vitamin E and linseed oil, all the while protecting and preserving its colour.

A healthy, balanced diet

You are what you eat, literally. Everything you put in your mouth affects your entire body because of how nutrients react with one another. Since your hair is made of proteins, eating protein-rich foods and the accompanying micronutrients will ensure that your hair stays silky and shiny after all the hair treatments. Put foods like walnuts, eggs and fish (bursting with omega fatty acids) on your plate. Also tuck into foods that are rich in biotin and vitamin B, such as eggs and avocados.

For the best results, it’s essential to incorporate these tips into your everyday haircare routine. They’re not a quick overnight fix – it’s going to take some dedication to achieve the romance and magic of soft and silky hair. You’ve achieved the perfect hair if it feels light, bouncy and almost has its own glow. Or top tip to get the hair od your dream? Have a salon stylist take care of it – that’s what the experts are there for!

Hair combs for each hair type

For some people, hair brushing is a therapeutic routine that brings it much joy. For others, it’s a real chore! No matter which one you are, if there’s ever a clump of hair left on your hairbrush after grooming, or you find it particularly difficult to manage, it may not necessarily be your hair that’s the problem, but rather your hairbrush.
