Let’s get back to braiding basics. Here’s how it’s done.
Step-by-step, here are the products you need to care for your natural hair as you grow that awesome afro.
Heat has always been the natural choice for styling hair. It stretches the hair and gives it the flexibility needed to sculpt and change its texture if need be. We all love a good heat styling session, but also know of the damaging effects that go with it. Breakage, permanently changing your natural curl pattern or making fine hair brittle are just some heat-induced nightmares faced by many women. The key is to give it some time for recovery – and when your hair needs to breathe, here are the best heatless hairstyles for you to consider.
No Heat Curls: you’ll need curlers, pins and a volumising finishing spray.
Begin by washing and conditioning your hair as you would normally. Then dab and squeeze your hair dry with a towel or T-shirt. Once dry, take a strand of hair and secure rollers from the ends to your scalp. Secure with a pin. Do this until your entire head is covered in pins and rollers. Leave them in for a few hours or overnight, then gently pull them out one by one. Finish off by using Redken Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray for volume and texture.
Messy Bun: you’ll need a fine-toothed comb.
This is great for longer or natural hair. Begin by combing your hair into a high ponytail. Pulling your ponytail upwards, use a fine-toothed comb and run it from the ends down to your hairband, fluffing it up as desired. Once your ponytail is beautifully messy, wrap it around your hairband and fasten with a pin.
Flat twist: You’ll need bobby pins.
This one’s perfect for naturally textured hair. Start by parting your hair into two separate halves. Begin on one side, braiding the front sections of your hair onto the scalp, moving around the head, gathering more hair from the nape as you go. Keep braiding until the tail reaches your ear and fasten the ends with pins. Repeat on the other side.
Remember, when it comes to styling without heat, don’t underestimate the power of pins! They should be your go-to when you can’t take a break from awesome hairstyles, but your hair needs a break from heat.
