Wavy hair and how best to care for it
09 March 2018
Those fortunate enough to have wavy hair boast an often-nonchalant effortless look perfect for the summer months, when being
on the beach should be mandatory. The downside to wavy hair? The frizz. While some quite literally ‘woke up like
this’, others fight endlessly to control a
hair type that’s in-between straight and curly.
Fortunately, we’ve got just what you need to take the best care of your Type 3 wavy hair for a look that’ll
have others green with envy.
Wash and go
The wash and go is one of the most effective methods of styling when it comes to wavy hair. The cleansing process, however,
lays the foundation for your styling, so it’s important to choose products that give you well-defined and hydrated
waves. A product that includes coconut oil, like intensely nourishing L’Oréal Professionnel Nutrifier with
glycerol and coconut oil, is your best bet because it detangles and helps condition hair. Jojoba, avocado and sesame oil
are also great for smoothing, softening and adding a luminous shine to clean hair.
Wavy hair is thirsty hair. That’s why deep conditioning at least once or twice a week is important to achieve soft,
shiny hair. No lightweight conditioner will do here, you’ll need a rich product like the Nutrifier Overnight Mask
– also from L’Oréal Professionnel – that fills the porous areas on the surface of the hair so
it stays hydrated. Apply a thick layer of deep conditioner to the hair, wrap it up with a towel or plastic shower cap and
leave on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing.
Define those waves
Just as you would use a product to define curly hair, so should you invest in a product that moisturises waves and retains
their unique shape. It’s worth using a product that also combats frizz, breakage, dryness and split ends while you’re
at it, like Mizani’s Kerafuse Intense Strengthening Treatment – a must-have for those looking for a smoothing,
sleek hair effect with increased shine and body.
Richard Nienaber, Regional Education Developer for Redken, has a few extra tips to ensure you maintain control of your locks,
and keep the dreaded frizz at bay. He explains, “As little combing as possible is always a good tip, and use curling
creams to give your curls the love and
convincing they need.” Richard is a major proponent of Redken’s Frizz Dismiss range, while he recommends
Redken Curvaceous Ringlet Anti-Frizz Perfecting Lotion for women who want to pull off lazy, but perfectly shaped, curls.
