“Stop squirming. Beauty is pain!” How many times were you told that by your Gogo when she used to braid your hair? Or even now, by your bff when she’s helping to relax your hair, and you feel things start to burn? For too long we’ve accepted the hearsay advice that the process of getting great-looking hair has to hurt. But guess what? That’s not true.

If you think about it for a second, logically, you know pain isn’t good. At any other time, you can recognise it as your body warning you that something is wrong. And it’s the same for your hair and scalp, regardless of what important people in your life tell you.

For example, hairstyles that feel too tight are probably putting strain on strands and your scalp. This can lead to breakage and impede hairline growth. When it comes to relaxing your hair at home, the products come with strict instructions about application times for good reason. You risk chemical burns, dryness, thinning and other damage ranging in severity.

Of course, hair styling shouldn’t hurt – especially at a salon. Richard Nienaber, Redken’s Business Developer Educator confirms that any style or treatment done by a reputable professional should be pain-free. He confirms, “This is true for everything from braids and weaves to colour application.”

Richard does have an important clarification to make though – and that’s about discomfort felt by some women when having their hair coloured. “This could be because the stylist hasn’t applied a protective oil onto the scalp first, or the bleach needs more developer to drop the pH level. This may not be the case for everyone but those who battle with a sensitive scalp may suffer less discomfort if these steps are followed.”

When it comes to haircare wisdom, ultimately, it’s best to always turn to the experts. As Richard says, “The key is to always visit a knowledgeable professional, so you know you’re getting the best treatment. And, if at any time you do feel pain, you should always speak up – they will know what to do to alleviate any discomfort.”

Sleep may be essential for your body, but it can wreak havoc with your hair – especially if you’re an African woman trying to maintain and/or grow a natural style full of bouncy volume. Too easily your curls can be crushed against your pillow. Even worse, if you struggle with dry, brittle hair, night-time tossing and turning may even cause breakage. There are few things more soul destroying than finding a solitary braid left behind once you’ve climbed out of bed.
