Sleep may be essential for your body, but it can wreak havoc with your hair – especially if you’re an African woman trying to maintain and/or grow a natural style full of bouncy volume. Too easily your curls can be crushed against your pillow. Even worse, if you struggle with dry, brittle hair, night-time tossing and turning may even cause breakage. There are few things more soul destroying than finding a solitary braid left behind once you’ve climbed out of bed.

Protective hair styling is your main protection against such a scenario, but there are a few other tricks you can pull out your sleeve. Pantyhose, anyone?

Actually, scratch that! Pantyhose are a bad idea. One of the main concerns of women with African hair is their edges. If you’re trying to protect your hairline, placing elasticated pantyhose over your head is a bad idea. The continual friction and pressure at those delicate scalp spots can discourage hair growth.

Here’s what you should be doing at bedtime for better hair.

Moisturise

Hair is less likely to break if it is well nourished inside and out. Before going lights out, apply an effective, lightweight formulation like Mizani’s Rose H20 Conditioning Hairdress (ideal for relaxed hair) and Mizani Coconut Souffle Light Moisturizing Hairdress (recommended for natural locks). Afterwards, you may also want to reach for the True Textures® Curl Define Pudding for some bonus manageability and finish off this part of your routine with a coat of shine- and softness-enhancing Mizani Supreme Oil, a treatment suitable for any hair type.

Use a protective style

Another crucial part of your hair’s bedtime routine is protective styling. What you do will probably depend on hair length and personal choice. It could be braids, twists, a “pineapple” updo, or even involve rollers. Any of these will help to preserve your curl shape and prevent shrinkage overnight.

Wrap your hair

After protective styling, guard against damage and dryness by covering your hair. Many women reach for a satin or silk head scarf, or a bonnet made of the same material (although beware, the bonnet is elastic, which can rub at your hairline). If you’re unsure of how to best wrap your hair, here’s a tutorial

Upgrade your pillowcase

A satin or silk pillowcase is about more than personal pampering. Using one will double up on your hair protection, because they’re so smooth and soft. Cotton pillowcases, by contrast, have a rougher texture which snags fragile, extremely coiled African hair. This causes frizziness, tangles and hair breakage. Cotton also tends to leech moisture from hair, unlike silk and satin.

Now you know how to make those sweet dreams of beautiful curls a reality. Sleep tight and wake up to better-looking hair.
