Throwback hair: Making pigtails chic
26 March 2019
Chances are, you haven’t worn pigtails since you were a little girl. It’s not exactly a grown-up look… or is it? In a new twist that’s both elegant and playful, we’re seeing pigtails making a comeback in the fashion world and even gracing the red carpet at celebrity events.
Yes, pigtails can be stylish with a little know-how. Think more glamorous and sexy and less cutesy and childish. Here’s how to get the look:
Smooth and shiny pigtail buns
This is an ultra-elegant updo that is sure to turn heads when paired with a stunning evening gown for a special event. The look is very slick, structured and symmetrical.
First, blow-dry your hair so that it is smooth and straight. We recommend using Redken Diamond Oil Glow Dry before your blow-dry to protect your hair from heat and to enhance shine.
Use a tail-comb to part your hair down the centre, making sure that your parting is perfectly straight - from your forehead to the nape of your neck. Secure each section with a hairband just above the nape of your neck and ensure that the hair lies flat and sleek against your scalp. Roll the hair up underneath each pigtail, and secure with hairpins.
Fix with L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Fix Anti-Frizz Spray to keep your style in place. This product offers extra strong hold to combat frizz for up to 24 hours - just in case you plan on partying all night! Finish off by tying a ribbon around the base of each pigtail to cover the hairbands.
Rockstar space buns
Girls with naturally curly or frizzy hair may struggle to achieve a super sleek look, but messy buns? That you can do!
Work a few sprays of Mizani 25 Miracle Milk through your locks to help combat frizz before you begin. We love this product because it’s incredibly nourishing and moisturising for dry curly hair.
Part your hair down the centre and pull each section into a high pigtail at the crown of your head, keeping the hair against your scalp as smooth and tight as possible. Take sections of each pigtail and twist loosely to form 2 tousled buns, securing with hairpins as needed. Allow sections of curl to fall loose and create texture.
Add a couple of extra spritzes of Mizani 25 Miracle Milk if you notice any frizzy flyaways. Finish the look with diamanté hairpins peeking in-between your curls.
