Dreadlocks are one of the most culturally unique natural hairstyles to wear. Their growing popularity among natural hair lovers means more people are considering this as a permanent look. To give you a taste of the dreads life, should you choose to accept it, we’ve answered some of your most pressing questions when it comes to this style. Here we go!

How much shorter will my hair be when I dread it?

Since your hair is being wound up, gathered and knotted at the roots, it will look like your hair is shrinking when in fact, it’s not. Don’t worry, your hair is still growing even if it looks static and shorter at first.

How long do dreadlocks last?

It all depends on how well you maintain them. Dreadlocks are the same as any other hairstyle – the better you take care of them, the longer they will last and the better their condition will be. If you practice a daily regimen of rolling and washing regularly, your dreadlocks will last for as long as you want them to.

What kind of shampoo will work for my dreads?

Shampoos designed to be low on residue should be the only ones used on dreads. The porous nature of dreads makes them very absorbent of products, so using ordinary soapy shampoos can lead to product buildup. This can loosen the knots in your dreads and unravel them, while also irritating the scalp and – in the long term – leaving them susceptible to mould and rot.

How long will it take for my hair to lock?

This will depend on the style of lock and your hair texture. Thicker hair has stronger holding power so very tightly coiled hair will have the quickest locking time (estimated at half a year), while finer, more loosely coiled hair can expect to take about a year. Sister locks are a popular style to wear while you wait for your hair to officially lock and begin to mature.

How do I undread my hair and get back to regular natural hair?

To undread your hair you’ll need to wash it first for softening. Next use a metal tipped tail comb to untie the knots in the roots then comb each dread out from the ends before gently pulling the hair apart to loosen the locks. Once this is complete, comb your hair into your desired look.

Successfully pulling off dreads takes patience, plenty of time and effort to keep them healthy. But we guarantee you’ll be rewarded with months of natural African beauty if you play your cards right. For any other questions and a full low-down on dreadlocks, go ahead and consult your trusted salon stylist.
