Shorter at the back and sides with volume at the crown and in the front, tapered natural hairstyles rock some serious style! But do you really want to cut your hair into a tapered style when it’s taken forever to grow out? Hell no. Instead, we’ll tell you how to fake it. With some strategic styling, you can achieve faux tapered natural hair that lasts for days.

Style your hair into a faux afro taper

Faking short tapered natural hairstyles is all about creating big curls at the front, and tight curls at the back to make your hair look shorter.

Tools of the trade

  • Large clips to section your hair
  • A tangle teaser
  • Curlers or perm rods in 3 sizes (small, medium and large)
  • A hair pick
  • Bobby pins

Products to use

Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk: Containing ingredients like agave nectar, cocoa, shea butter and natural oils, this range transforms dry hair to leave it hydrated, soft, strong and ultra-shiny.

Mizani True Textures: Infused with marula oil, olive oil and coconut oil, this range provides enhanced definition for curls and waves while repairing and rejuvenating dry, brittle hair.

  1. Using clips, separate your hair into 3 main sections – front, top and back.
  2. Prep the back section with Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Original Leave-in Moisturizer and smooth the hair with a tangle teaser.
  3. Separate hair into smaller sections and apply Mizani True Textures Twist and Coil Jelly. This curl-defining cream gives your style frizz-free staying power. Twist each section tightly, wrap around a small curler, and pin in place.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the top and front sections of your hair, using large curlers in the front and medium curlers on the top.
  5. Allow your hair to dry. For best results, tie a scarf over your head and leave it overnight.
  6. Spray on a small amount of Mizani 25 Miracle Milk, and remove the curlers, starting at the back. The formulation will help protect your hair from breaking as you remove the curlers.
  7. Use your fingers and a hair pick to shape your style. Fluff out the larger curls in the front and on top. Try to keep the curls at the back as flat and small as possible. Use bobby pins to pin up sections at the sides if necessary.
  8. Finish off with some Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Alcohol-free Styling Gel to set the curl and lock in moisture.

[LO1]I’m not sure you want us to state Step 1, step 2 etc or if the style guide just gives instructions for how to write ‘Step 1’ IF you use it?
