Salon Secret

The online destination for all things hair.

The site showcases stylists’ professional expertise and promotes the latest industry innovations. Through smart, conversational content, Salon Secret brings stylists to their clients in a new way.

Fiery, fierce and fabulous - red hair never goes out of style! Whether you choose to go copper, auburn, or tomato is up to you… but one thing’s for sure, you’re going to want to do everything you can to maintain that vivid, salon-fresh colour.

Here’s how to get the most out of your drop-dead red hair:

1. Get it professionally done

Box dye may be quick and cheap, but a visit to the salon will result in hair colour that stays fresh and bright for longer. Ask your stylist about the new gel hair dyes [link to 1.19.8_SS_Gel hair dyes] that provide excellent coverage and fade-resistant colour.

2. Match your skin tone

Choose a red that is best-suited to your skin colouring. That way, even if the colour fades a little, it will still look beautiful against your skin.

Warm skin tones should choose warm reds like copper and auburn, while cool skin tones look great in cherry or magenta. Typically, people with very fair skin (pasty white), or olive or dark ethnic skin have cool skin tones. If you’re prone to freckles, chances are you have a warm skin tone.

3. Don’t wash too often

Every time you wash your colour-treated hair, you strip some of the intensity away. Keep your colour bright and saturated by trying to go as long as possible without shampooing. If your roots get a little oily, use a dry shampoo for a day or two instead of washing your whole head of hair.

4. Use products for colour-treated hair

We just love the Redken Color Extend range of products. Use Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Shampoo. This lightweight shampoo doesn’t strip the hair and contains RCT Protein Complex to lock in moisture and contains amino-ions to seal in vibrant colour. Follow up with Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Conditioner and treat with deep conditioning Redken Color Extend Magnetics Mega Mask once a week.

5. Stay out of the sun

UV rays can fade vivid red hair fast… so stay out of the sun. If you are going to be outside, cover your hair with a hat or a scarf to protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.

6. Touch up at the salon

Nothing detracts from beautiful red hair quite like root regrowth. Visit the salon every 6 to 8 weeks so that your stylist can touch up your roots, and brighten your red tresses with a gentle, ammonia-free colour wash.
