Love Your (Dread)Locks With These Three Care Essentials

Dreadlocks are considered a low-fuss hairstyle, and yes, once they’re established they’re a time-saving choice. The worst thing you can do, though, is get lazy about their upkeep. A) Dirty dreads that have gone weeks without washing are… just, ew. B) Without proper care, you could be forced to lose your locks sooner rather than later. Let’s avoid that together.

Keeping your dreads clean

It’s a widely held misconception that dreadlocks don’t need to be washed as often as other hairstyles. Mashudu Netshidzivhani, Mizani education developer , suggests washing every three days to once a week, saying “It does depend on a person’s level of physical activity, as gym fanatics will have more sweat to deal with, but once a week offers a decent balance. This way you’re not over-handling your locs and stripping them of natural oils, but you’re still keeping them clean and providing them with the benefits of scientifically formulated products.”

There are a number of excellent products on the market designed specifically for dreads. Products such as Mizani True Textures® Cream Cleansing Conditioner and Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Moisture-Replenishing Shampoo offer the cleansing power you are after, while still working to enhance hydration and manageability.

Keeping your dreads nourished

It’s not uncommon to experience dryness and breakage with dreadlocks. What’s more, locks can take on a dull appearance, and so it is important to keep them nourished. Combat this problem with a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, as well as a nice, lightweight leave-in oil like Mizani Supreme Oil Treatment, with its 99% naturally-derived formula. It’s advisable to opt for oils over wax to ensure optimal nourishment and overall hair health.

Look for quality products that contain natural oils such as:

  • Olive
  • Lavender
  • Castor
  • Jojoba
  • Almond
  • Rosemary

Protecting your dreads at night

At night, it’s advisable to wear a scarf or wrap, safeguarding your tresses against loss of moisture and breakage. Additionally, the protection of a quality silk wrap means your dreads stay lint and dust free. Remember not to wrap it too tightly as this could lead to breakage.

The secret ingredient to gorgeous dreadlocks is time. Locking is a long and delicate process. Achieving the locs of your dreams requires extreme patience, while practicing proper care and upkeep. To get the most out of dreadlocks they must be cleaned, nourished, protected and loved.
