Are your curly locks getting you down? We feel you! But we’re also kind of jealous you’ve been born with ringlets begging to be shaped and moulded into pure perfection. So, instead of taking to a straightening iron to rid yourself of admin – or reaching for the relaxer – why not try these simple tricks guarantee to make styling a breeze!

Don’t neglect nourishment

Intensely curly and coiled hair is prone to dryness. You probably know this already. But keeping your hair well-moisturised has style benefits too as brittle strands tend to break and turn wild with frizz. Don’t over-wash and make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner with a nourishing boost, like Mizani True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo and Moisture Replenish Conditioner. Once a week at least, apply a leave-in treatment too.

Style damp, not dry

Taking a brush to bone-dry curls is likely a recipe for disaster... or at least frizz. Combing and styling post-wash, when your hair is still damp but not dripping, will help you optimise curl shape, and keep it. Make sure you apply a styling product like Mizani True Textures Curl Define Pudding, that won’t weigh down your curls or leave visible residue.

Don’t forget protection

Air-drying hair is always better but if you’re going to use a hairdryer or heated styling tools, apply a protectant product for your curls first to avoid damage to your hair cuticles. The same goes for post-styling as our busy lives expose us to the drying sun and other harsh elements. Mizani 25 Miracle Milk works for both scenarios, and is great for a quick style and shine refresher at any point during the day too.

Use the right brush techniques and equipment

Honestly, you don’t want to fiddle too much with your curls or you risk over-working them and losing their shape. However, you also don’t want to be entirely hands-off or the result could be tangles and increased dryness (as natural hair oils won’t spread). Use a natural bristle brush or wide-tooth comb on your damp ringlets, starting about a hand width’s distance from the ends, and then brushing down. Repeat with another hand-width section above the first; again brushing down. With each new section, progress a bit further upwards until you start brushing from your scalp. For those fine baby hairs at your hairline, a toothbrush will help tame them.

Choose your cut carefully

Even if you’re growing your hair out, you need regular trims to combat split ends and ensure a more uniform look. Also, bear in mind that the longer your hair gets, the more it will stretch out your curls. Medium-length hair is a good middle ground in terms of playing around with style while optimising control.

If you’re still struggling to rein in your mane, your best bet is to speak to the professionals.  Make an appointment at your nearest salon get a personalised hair diagnosis and ask your stylist for recommendations about how to keep your tresses healthy-looking and obedient.
