We’ve fallen hard for box braids hairstyles. This super cute, uber-trendy style is the definition of #hairgoals, according to Rocky Bukasa, South African Mizani Educator. Here’s what you need to know about pulling off this flawless look that checks all the right style boxes!

What are box braid hairstyles?

Our expert has you covered on this hot topic. “Box braids are individual plaits that are usually divided by small squares of parts or boxes. Box braids may be of any width or length, but most women add synthetic or natural hair to the braid for length as well as thickness and fullness,” explains Bukasa. Thanks to this, it’s easy to customise your box braids to suit your tastes and your inspiration.

How to create a box braid hairstyle

You guessed it - by booking an appointment with your salon asap. A professional is your best bet to get this look spot-on, and they can advise you on the best styles for your texture and length. Your stylist will start by “parting the hair into individual boxes one at a time. The boxes can be small, medium or large sized. After the box has been created, the section of the hair in the box is then split into three even subsections and is braided all the way down to the ends,” says Bukasa.

Which box braid hairstyle for you?

With your box braids in tow, now it’s all about how to wear them. Our resident pro chimes in: “My favorite look is to wear them tied up. Get this look by creating knots using the braids, then use the knots to create an updo,” he suggests. Add some variation by asking your stylist to add different colour extensions to your box braids for definition and contrast, “which is perfect for braid updos,” says Bukasa. This is an ideal way to show off big and bold box braid hairstyles. “Another way to wear your braids is with a loose wavy texture, creating an easy, carefree bohemian vibe,” he adds.

That’s why it’s important to choose products that are designed for braids, in order to really make them stand out. I recommend using Mizani Edge Taming Gel. It should be used while braiding to ensure that the locks are flawless,” says Bukasa. “Keep some of the gel for your baby hair, in order to create some waves,” he adds.

“Another great product is Mizani 25 Miracle Milk, which is a leave-in conditioner and light moisturiser and keeps the hair hydrated and moisturised, which helps to minimise damage,” Bukasa suggests. It’s a good idea to help seal in moisture on the scalp, as this will alleviate the problems of tenderness and dryness. We’re also big fans of Mizani Scalp Calming Lotion, as it helps to prevent itching and tension, which can sometimes occur with braids.

Don’t be boxed in by your style - get out those box braids!
